AI and Cybersecurity: Managing Risk | SilverSky

10:49

## Executive Overview

Artificial intelligence is changing how software is developed, how businesses operate, and how cybersecurity threats emerge. For organizations, this creates two responsibilities: protecting against AI-enabled threats and managing risks introduced by their own use of AI.

At SilverSky, we are advancing our technology and security operations to address both. The objective remains the same: stronger protection, clearer accountability, and greater confidence in the security of our customers' environments.

## A Technology Revolution Decades in the Making

When Johannes Gutenberg introduced the printing press, the world did not change overnight. But the technology fundamentally altered how information was produced, distributed, and consumed.

For hundreds of years, manually copying written materials had been a specialized discipline. The printing press transformed how information was created and distributed, permanently changing how information could be accessed and controlled.

Artificial intelligence represents a similar turning point, although the pace of change is considerably faster and its full implications are difficult to predict.

In the mid-1980s, Marvin Minsky was among the leading voices in artificial intelligence research. In the halls of MIT, he could be found discussing a future in which machines could think. He believed that future was close.

His vision attracted enormous investment, including ventures such as Thinking Machines Corporation. But the technology could not yet deliver on its promise. Investment slowed, and the industry entered what became known as the AI winter.

The core research, however, never stopped.

Over the following decades, advances in algorithms, machine learning, mathematics, and computing power gradually expanded what computers could accomplish.

What we are witnessing today is the result of that sustained progression.

## What Has AI Actually Changed?

For much of the history of computing, turning a business idea into working software required several layers of translation.

Business leaders defined requirements. Product managers interpreted them. Engineers wrote code. Development teams tested whether the final product delivered what the customer originally wanted.

Those responsibilities still exist, but AI is dramatically reducing the time and effort required to move between them.

Today, business requirements can become working software prototypes in a fraction of the time once required. Developers use AI to review code, identify errors, improve existing systems, and accelerate development.

The implications extend well beyond software engineering.

Organizations can analyze information faster, automate complex processes, and make capabilities available to employees who previously depended on specialized technical resources.

But removing steps from a process does not remove the need for oversight. In fact, it can make oversight even more important.

AI-generated code still needs to be tested. Automated decisions still need to be understood. Business processes still need defined ownership, and sensitive information still needs to be protected.

**The speed of execution has changed. The responsibility for the outcome has not.**

## AI Is Changing Both Sides of Cybersecurity

For cybersecurity professionals, artificial intelligence creates an unusual situation.

The same capabilities that help defenders analyze information and identify potential threats can also help attackers operate more efficiently.

AI can assist with phishing campaigns, automate reconnaissance, analyze software weaknesses, and make certain forms of social engineering more convincing.

At the same time, machine learning and advanced analytics can help security teams recognize suspicious behavior, connect activity across systems, and prioritize events that warrant investigation.

The important distinction is how these capabilities are applied.

At SilverSky, we have used machine learning and behavioral analytics in cybersecurity for years.

Approximately a decade ago, engineers at a company we later acquired were experimenting with ways to identify relationships and patterns within large volumes of security data using AI methods. These techniques helped establish detection capabilities that continue to inform our approach today.

These systems were designed to do more than identify individual events. They could evaluate activity in context, recognize relationships, and help distinguish routine behavior from potentially meaningful threats.

As customer environments and data evolve, analytical methods can be adjusted to improve effectiveness.

This remains central to our philosophy.

As I discussed in [Filter Everything: Turning Security Signals Into Meaningful Action](https://silversky.com/executive-perspective-blog/executive-blog-filter-everything), collecting security information is only the beginning. The greater challenge is understanding what that information means and determining what action should follow.

AI provides increasingly powerful ways to assist with that work.

It does not eliminate the need for experienced security professionals to interpret findings and make informed decisions.

## The Other AI Risk: How Your Organization Uses It

There is another side of AI security that deserves just as much attention.

Many employees are already using generative AI to research information, prepare documents, analyze data, write code, and automate everyday work.

For the most part, these activities are intended to improve productivity.

But what happens when an employee enters confidential customer information into an AI application? What happens when an AI system is connected to internal business records or given permission to perform actions across multiple applications?

The answer depends on the technology, its configuration, the vendor's data-handling policies, and the controls the organization has established.

Different AI services offer different protections. Depending on the service and account settings, information submitted to an AI system may be retained or used for purposes beyond the immediate request.

Organizations need to understand these conditions before allowing sensitive business or customer information to enter an AI workflow.

Cost and operational control introduce additional considerations.

AI systems that execute repeated prompts, call other services, or operate autonomously can generate substantial consumption-based expenses if appropriate limits are not established.

These are not reasons to avoid AI, but reasons to manage its adoption with the same discipline applied to any other business-critical technology.

## How SilverSky Is Adapting

For nearly three decades, SilverSky has helped organizations protect their systems, maintain operational continuity, and address complex cybersecurity and compliance requirements.

Over the past several years, we have been modernizing our own technology and operational processes to address an ever-changing security environment.

Our engineering teams are applying more advanced development methods and AI-assisted capabilities to improve the systems supporting the services we provide.

Within our security operations, we are continuing to advance how information is analyzed, how suspicious activity is investigated, and how meaningful threats are identified.

We are also incorporating the [MITRE ATLAS framework](https://atlas.mitre.org/) into our approach to artificial intelligence threats.

MITRE ATLAS provides a structured knowledge base of adversarial tactics and techniques involving AI systems. It complements established cybersecurity practices by helping security professionals understand how AI-enabled technologies may be targeted or misused.

For customers operating under formal compliance requirements, this perspective matters.

Regulatory frameworks establish important expectations for governance, controls, and accountability. AI introduces additional risks that organizations must understand and address within their existing security programs.

The goal is not simply to add more AI technology.

It is to make security operations more effective while maintaining appropriate controls over how that technology is used.

## What Should Organizations Do Now?

Business and security leaders should begin with three priorities.

**First, understand where AI is already being used.**

Identify the applications, services, and automated workflows operating within the organization. Establish who owns them, what information they can access, and how their use is governed.

**Second, establish appropriate boundaries.**

Review AI vendor agreements, data-handling practices, access permissions, and consumption controls. Make sure employees understand what information is appropriate to share and which activities require human review.

**Third, ensure security operations are prepared.**

AI-related risks should be considered within existing detection, response, risk management, and compliance processes. Organizations need visibility into relevant activity and clear procedures for investigating and responding when something goes wrong.

For organizations with limited internal IT and security resources, these responsibilities can quickly become difficult to manage independently.

That is where an experienced security partner can help translate new risks into practical operational requirements.

## Looking Ahead

Artificial intelligence will continue to change how businesses develop technology and how cybersecurity is delivered.

Some of today's tools will become standard business infrastructure. Others will be replaced as the technology matures. New capabilities will introduce new risks, and security programs will need to adapt accordingly.

At SilverSky, our responsibility is to evaluate these developments, incorporate useful advances into our operations, and work with customers to modernize their security programs while helping them maintain security and compliance confidence as their environments evolve.

I intend to continue sharing updates on what we are learning, how our technology is progressing, and what these developments mean for the organizations we serve.

The technology will continue to change.

**Our responsibility to protect our customers will not.**

If this read like a real person wrote this blog, that's because one did.

Respectfully,

Cary Conrad
